A (holiday) note from Skye

Mt Arawang in Canberra

Hello!

I’m writing this from a beach house in Jervis Bay, NSW, Australia, where I’m holidaying with my whole family (two sisters, parents, assorted children/nieces/nephews). It’s the first time we’ve all been together for about 12 years. It’s the first time my mother has ever had all her grandchildren in the same place at the same time. So I’m going to make this brief, because I’m busy filling up my cup so I can make it through to the next time, and I’m essentially ignoring both real and online life for this short, precious time.

But I wanted you to know that in the week since we arrived, we have seen kangaroos, wombats and baby whales, all in the wild, just going about their business. We have seen waterfalls, swum in crystal clear blue sea on a beach with the whitest sand imaginable that was also deserted (because Australia), and danced at a family wedding. We’ve cooked a lot of meals, driven a lot of miles, and done a lot of laundry, and there’s still three weeks to go.

Fieldfare stuff

Following on from the publication of Issue 2 of Fieldfare in late May, we will shortly begin production of Issue 3, due to publish in October. The theme of our next issue will be “sanctuary”, so if there are any budding writers and photographers out there who would like to consider contributing, we will be announcing more information soon on Instagram and via our newsletter. In the meantime, we’ve updated our Submissions page with a bit more detail on the kinds of things we’re looking for.

Reading

Holiday reading: the Shadow and Bone trilogy by Leigh Bardugo (also screening on Netflix, which is where I came across it) and the follow-up duology Six of Crows (lent to me by my niece and finished in about 3 days) and Crooked Kingdom. What can I say, I’m a sucker for a good YA fantasy series.

And making me laugh as well as nod in agreement: this article by the Guardian’s Hadley Freeman about how 21st-century children react to the old Disney classics. Let’s just say they haven’t all aged well.

And on that note I’ll say goodbye and head back to the beach! I hope those of you in the northern hemisphere are enjoying a good summer break.
